The Photomatic camera is a camera that is able to shoot photos automatically. It is designed to capture a social event in a setting of a bar, diner or club. The camera acts as a passive photographer in the center of the social context as the only interaction possibility is the control of the camera’s sensor sensitivity. Discretely it scans its surroundings for potentially interesting moments, triggered by human body motion. After observations in the proposed context, I found human body motion the most interesting factor to trigger photos with. User experiments showed that a soft, flowing, anthropomorphic form is the most discreet and convenient as this device is a monitoring device and the “Big Brother” effect may occur.
